3 Essential Skincare products you need for great skin

In the UK alone there are literally hundreds of different skincare brands and associated ‘skinfluencers’ pushing the latest expensive miracle cream, all of which can create a crowded and at times confusing market for patients who simply wish to know which skincare products will provide the most value for money.

Whilst there maybe countless skincare products and treatments available, there are three essential steps the majority of patients can take which if done consistently WILL help achieve skincare goals: wearing SPF, using retinol, and incorporating vitamin C into your routine.

  1. Wear SPF Daily

One of the most important steps we can take for our skin is to wear sunscreen every day. Sun damage can cause premature aging, dark spots, and even skin cancer, so protecting our skin from UV rays is crucial.

When choosing a sunscreen, look for one that provides broad-spectrum protection, meaning it protects against both UVA and UVB rays. UVA rays are responsible for premature aging, while UVB rays cause sunburn. A broad-spectrum sunscreen will help protect against both types of rays.

It’s also important to choose a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30, and to reapply every 2 hours if you’re spending time outdoors or in direct sunlight. And don’t forget to protect your lips with a lip balm that contains SPF.

  1. Use Retinol

Retinol is one of the most popular and effective skincare ingredients on the market. It is a derivative of vitamin A and is known for its ability to combat the signs of aging, improve skin texture, and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. If you’re considering incorporating retinol into your skincare routine, here are some of the benefits you can expect.

  1. Reduces signs of aging: Retinol stimulates the production of collagen, which helps to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. It also helps to improve skin texture and tone, leaving your skin looking smoother and more youthful.
  • Clears acne: Retinol is a great ingredient for those with acne-prone skin. It helps to unclog pores, reduce inflammation, and regulate sebum production, which can all lead to a reduction in breakouts.
  • Improves skin texture: Retinol promotes cell turnover, which can help to smooth out rough or uneven skin texture. It also helps to reduce the appearance of large pores and improve overall skin clarity.
  • Brightens skin tone: Retinol can help to fade dark spots and hyperpigmentation, leaving your skin looking brighter and more even-toned.
  • Enhances product absorption: Using retinol can help to enhance the absorption of other skincare products. This means that your other serums, moisturizers, and treatments will work more effectively when used in conjunction with retinol.

Retinol can be irritating to some people, so it’s important to use it correctly to avoid redness, flaking, or other adverse effects. For this reason it is recommended whether you are using a over the counter retinol or prescription dose it is worth seeing a Medical Professional or skin specialist when initiating Retinol and for monitoring purposes.

When incorporating retinol into your skincare routine, start with a low concentration and gradually increase the strength as your skin adjusts.

You can start by using a retinol product every other night, and gradually increase to nightly use over time. It’s also important to use a moisturizer to help counteract the drying effects of retinol.

If you have sensitive skin, you may want to consider using a milder form of vitamin A, such as retinyl palmitate or retinaldehyde, which are less irritating but still effective.

Overall, retinol is a powerful and effective ingredient that can help improve the appearance and health of your skin. If you’re looking to combat the signs of aging, reduce breakouts, and improve your overall skin health, retinol is definitely worth considering.

  1. Incorporate Vitamin C

Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that can help protect the skin from environmental damage and boost collagen production. It’s also been shown to brighten the skin and improve the appearance of dark spots and uneven tone.

When choosing a vitamin C product, look for one that contains a stable form of vitamin C, such as L-ascorbic acid, which is the most effective form. Vitamin C can be unstable and break down when exposed to light and air, so it’s important to choose a product with good packaging that will keep the vitamin C fresh and effective.

You can incorporate vitamin C into your routine by using a serum or moisturizer that contains vitamin C. Apply it in the morning after cleansing and before sunscreen for maximum benefits.

In conclusion for any person who is looking to improve their skin than look no further than these three products to get started. Once the basics have been achieved than you can explore the value of adding in 1 or 2 serums which may add further value and supercharge your skin.
