Skin Looking Different After Your Summer Holiday? The Best Treatments for Sun-Damaged Skin in Surrey

It often happens at the end of summer. The tan starts to fade, normal routines resume, and suddenly your skin doesn’t look quite as it did before you went away. Perhaps a few brown patches have become more obvious, your complexion looks duller, or fine lines that weren’t bothering you before seem more noticeable.

A summer holiday doesn’t create years of skin ageing in a fortnight, but stronger or more prolonged UV exposure can make existing sun damage easier to see. Pigmentation can darken, skin can feel dehydrated and repeated UV exposure contributes to the breakdown of collagen and elastin over time.

At Revital Lab in Esher, September is a good time to reassess the skin and decide what it actually needs. That doesn’t necessarily mean booking the strongest treatment available. Sun-damaged skin can present in several different ways, and the treatment that suits pigmentation may be quite different from the one we would choose for thinning, crepey or dehydrated skin.

What Does Sun-Damaged Skin Look Like?

Sun damage, also known as photoageing, is the result of cumulative exposure to ultraviolet light.

Some of the changes are easy to recognise, such as freckles or areas of pigmentation becoming darker after a holiday. Others happen more gradually.

You might notice:

  • Brown spots or patches of pigmentation
  • Uneven skin tone
  • Dullness
  • Rougher or less even texture
  • Fine lines becoming more visible
  • Dry or dehydrated skin
  • Reduced firmness and elasticity
  • Skin beginning to look thinner or more crepey

UVA and UVB affect the skin differently. UVB is strongly associated with sunburn and direct DNA damage, while UVA penetrates more deeply and contributes to photoageing, including collagen and elastin damage.

This is also why a tan isn’t necessarily a sign of healthy skin. Tanning itself is a response to UV exposure.

The effects of sun exposure accumulate over time, so what you see after this year’s holiday may reflect exposure from previous years as well.

So, What Is the Best Treatment for Sun Damage?

There isn’t one treatment that is best for every type of sun damage.

If the main problem is pigmentation, the priority may be controlling excess pigment and preventing it from becoming darker again.

If your skin has become dull, dehydrated or crepey, improving hydration and supporting collagen and elastin may be more useful.

Where texture, pores and fine lines are the main concern, a treatment that encourages skin remodelling may be recommended instead.

For many patients, the most effective plan combines good home skincare with one or more carefully selected treatments rather than trying to correct everything in a single appointment.

Here are some of the options we use at Revital Lab.

Sunekos for Dull, Dehydrated and Sun-Aged Skin

If your skin looks tired after summer rather than significantly pigmented, Sunekos may be worth considering.

Sunekos is an injectable treatment containing hyaluronic acid and a specific combination of amino acids. Rather than adding facial volume in the way a dermal filler does, it works within the skin to support fibroblast activity and the production of collagen and elastin.

This makes it particularly useful when sun exposure is only part of the picture and you’re also starting to notice changes associated with ageing.

We may consider Sunekos where the skin is:

  • Dull or dehydrated
  • Losing elasticity
  • Developing fine lines
  • Becoming thinner or crepey
  • Generally looking less fresh than it used to

It can be used on the face, around the eyes, and on areas such as the neck and décolletage, which are often exposed to a considerable amount of sun but can be overlooked when it comes to skincare.

Sunekos isn’t designed to remove an individual brown spot. Its role is different. We use it when improving the overall quality of the skin is the priority.

Results also aren’t about changing the shape of your face. They develop gradually as the skin responds to treatment, which suits patients who want their skin to look healthier without an obvious treated appearance.

SkinPen Microneedling for Texture and Visible Sun Damage

For skin that feels rougher after summer, has uneven texture or is showing superficial pigmentation and fine lines, SkinPen microneedling is another option we commonly use.

Microneedling creates controlled micro-injuries in the skin, prompting a natural healing response and stimulating new collagen and elastin.

The changes aren’t instant. Skin remodelling happens progressively, which is why a course of treatments may be recommended rather than expecting everything from one session.

SkinPen can be particularly useful when several signs of photoageing are present at the same time, for example uneven texture alongside fine lines and loss of radiance.

Depending on the patient’s skin and goals, microneedling can also be combined with regenerative treatments such as exosomes.

What About Pigmentation and Sun Spots?

This needs a slightly different approach.

Pigmentation that appears or becomes darker after a holiday isn’t something we would automatically treat with an injectable. First, it’s important to understand what type of pigmentation we’re looking at.

Sun spots, post-inflammatory pigmentation and melasma do not necessarily behave in the same way.

This matters particularly with melasma because heat and UV exposure can make it worse, and an overly aggressive approach can sometimes be counterproductive.

For appropriate patients, a targeted medical-grade skincare programme may be more useful than simply adding more in-clinic treatments.

Retinol and Retinoids After Summer

Retinoids are among the most useful ingredients we have for photoaged skin.

They encourage skin cell turnover and, with consistent use, can help with uneven tone, texture and fine lines while supporting collagen.

Revital Lab has long taken a fairly simple approach to everyday skincare: good sun protection, vitamin C and a retinoid form the basis of a sensible routine for many patients.

The important part is choosing the right strength for your skin.

More isn’t always better, particularly if you’ve returned from holiday with skin that already feels dry, sensitive or irritated. Jumping straight into a strong retinoid can leave the skin barrier even more compromised.

For some patients an over-the-counter retinol is sufficient. Others may benefit from stronger prescription skincare following assessment by Dr Raj.

When Pigmentation Needs a More Targeted Plan

If pigmentation has become a significant concern, we may discuss a more structured medical-grade skincare programme.

Ingredients such as tretinoin and, where clinically appropriate, hydroquinone can be used within prescription-led pigmentation plans. These aren’t products we would recommend simply because someone has come home with a few new freckles.

Patient selection, the type of pigmentation and ongoing sun protection all matter.

This is also why autumn can be a useful time to review pigmentation. Once intense summer exposure has reduced, we can assess what has persisted and plan treatment appropriately rather than constantly fighting against further UV exposure.

Don’t Forget Vitamin C and SPF

Professional treatments can improve visible signs of sun damage, but there is little point investing in them and then leaving the skin unprotected.

A good broad-spectrum SPF should be part of your routine throughout the year, not just while you’re abroad.

UVA exposure doesn’t disappear when the temperature drops, and protecting the skin from further UV damage is one of the most important things you can do to preserve collagen and prevent pigmentation from becoming more pronounced.

An antioxidant such as vitamin C can also be useful in a morning routine. Alongside sunscreen, it can help support the skin against oxidative stress and can be helpful for brightness and uneven tone.

The routine doesn’t need to contain ten different products. Often, getting a few evidence-based products right and using them consistently achieves far more than constantly changing skincare.

What If You Have More Than One Concern?

This is probably more common than having one isolated problem.

Someone might come into clinic saying, “I want to get rid of these sun spots,” but when we assess their skin, there may also be dehydration, reduced elasticity and early textural changes.

That doesn’t mean we treat everything at once.

We might begin by getting the skincare right, then introduce SkinPen to address texture and collagen, or recommend a course of Sunekos where loss of elasticity, hydration and skin quality are more noticeable.

Revital Lab also offers treatments such as PRX-T33 for suitable patients where dullness and texture are a concern. It can be used as a biorevitalisation treatment to support collagen and improve skin texture and radiance.

The plan should make sense for your skin rather than simply working through a menu of treatments.

Can You Completely Reverse Sun Damage?

Not completely, and we’d be cautious of anyone promising that you can.

Years of UV exposure cannot simply be erased. What we can do is improve many of the visible effects, support healthier collagen production, address pigmentation where appropriate and protect the skin against further damage.

It’s also worth remembering that some new or changing pigmented lesions require medical assessment rather than cosmetic treatment. If you have a mole or mark that has changed in size, shape or colour, is bleeding, itching or otherwise concerns you, it should be assessed appropriately before considering aesthetic treatment.

Starting a Post-Summer Skin Plan in Surrey

If you’ve come back from holiday and feel that your skin suddenly looks older, more pigmented or simply less healthy, you don’t necessarily need to decide for yourself whether you need Sunekos, microneedling, a peel or a new skincare routine.

That’s what the consultation is for.

At Revital Lab in Esher, Surrey, Dr Raj can assess the skin itself, look at the changes that are bothering you and recommend where your money is actually best spent.

For one patient, that might be a course of Sunekos to improve hydration, elasticity and skin quality. For another, SkinPen may be more useful for texture and photoageing. Someone predominantly concerned about pigmentation may benefit more from a carefully planned skincare programme.

And sometimes, the first recommendation is simply to improve what you’re doing at home.

The aim isn’t to throw every available treatment at post-summer skin. It’s to work out what has changed, what can realistically be improved and choose the treatment that makes sense.
